88.1 the Park Euchre Tournament is Saturday October 8, 2016

crowd-shotEuchre players – get ready for some exciting competition and support 88-1.

The 88-1 The Park Fifth Annual Euchre Classic is just a couple days away. Join us on Saturday October 8 at the Elks Club in Plymouth. This year’s tournament features prizes for the top ten percent of the field. Early bird entries are just $20 prior to October 3, and $25 after. Players will also receive pizza, snacks and a cash bar.

The proceeds benefit 88-1 The Park, the student radio program for Canton, Plymouth and Salem High Schools.  For more information, or to register, call 248-WSDPEUCHRE.

88.1 the Park Auditions – Applications are due Sept. 23

sam-badger-in-studio-aStudents at Plymouth-Canton Educational Park can join the staff of one of the best high school radio stations.  88.1 The Park is accepting applications for new staff members and they are due on Friday September 23, 2016.

Students will have an opportunity to work in all areas of the station’s operation including as a DJ, Sports Announcer, Promotions Assistant, News Anchor and Production Assistant.  They will gain experience that will prepare them for careers in media and will develop business skills that will stick with them for a lifetime.

Applications are available at the Canton, Plymouth and Salem High School General Offices, and at the station’s office at Salem.  They are also available at our website.

A list of students that receive auditions will be posted at the station on Tuesday September 27.  Auditions will take place on Tuesday October 4, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at the station’s office at Salem.

Students auditioning will be given a packet to prepare a newscast. They will read the newscast at the audition and will be involved in a short job interview.

88.1 the Park Staff Member of the Month – Emma Menebroker

art-and-the-park-2016-zain-emma-and-jack-2Emma Menebroker is the 88.1 the Park August 2016 Staff Member of the Month.  This is the second month in-a-row that Emma has been honored with the recognition.

In addition to hosting a weekly show in August, she also covered two news stories and helped with live promotional broadcasts.  She also covered for other DJ’s by hosting their show.

“We appreciate Emma’s willingness to go above and beyond for the station,” said Bill Keith, Station Manager.  “We normally give our students a break in August but they all took on extra responsibilities, with Emma leading the way.  We are lucky to have her on our staff.”

88.1 the Park is a Finalist for the 2016 Marconi Radio Award

For the third consecutive year, the students and staff of  88.1 The Park are being recognized alongside America’s elite broadcasters after the station was named a finalist for the National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Radio Award for Non-Commercial Station of the Year.

88.1 The Park is the only high school radio station to receive a nomination in the history of the Marconi awards.   Three college-level student stations and one professional station round out the 2016 class of Non-Commercial finalists.  The awards will be presented on Thursday September 22, 2016 at the NAB Marconi Radio Awards 27th Anniversary Dinner and Show in Nashville Tennessee.  88.1 the Park staff members will be in Nashville for the NAB Radio Show and the Marconi Awards.

“We’re excited to be a finalist for the third year in-a-row . This is an incredibly prestigious honor for our hard working and dedicated staff,” said Amanda Barberena, Program Director

“We couldn’t achieve this without the support of the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, the board of education, administrators and staff.   We’re lucky to have been part of such a great community,” said Bill Keith, Station Manager.

Community Focus – September 14, 2016

Bill Keith speaks with Canton Police School Resource Officer Andy Curry about the increase in car accidents and driving violations on and near the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park Campus.  The driving infractions are especially prevalent at student arrival and dismissal times.  They are working together to educate students about the need for greater focus while driving.
